What happens during a boiler installation survey

See which household needs, existing equipment, access details and installation options may be discussed during a boiler survey with UKHS.

At a glance

A boiler installation survey helps an installer understand your household, existing system and practical constraints before proposing work. It is the opportunity to explain what you need and ask how a possible installation would fit the home. A survey does not mean the same boiler or layout will suit every property.

A boiler installation survey helps an installer understand your household, existing system and practical constraints before proposing work. It is the opportunity to explain what you need and ask how a possible installation would fit the home. A survey does not mean the same boiler or layout will suit every property.

Before arranging the visit, ask what it covers and whether there is a charge. Describe the postcode, current appliance and reason for considering a change. If the existing boiler is faulty, make that clear so any immediate repair enquiry can be considered separately.

Explain how the household uses heating and hot water

Tell the installer about the rooms you heat, the bathrooms and the way hot water is normally used. A household that often uses two showers at once may have different requirements from one where hot water is used at a single outlet. You do not need to calculate an appliance size yourself.

Mention planned changes that could affect the proposal, such as a bathroom renovation or extension that is already being considered. Distinguish definite plans from possibilities. Otherwise the installer may be asked to design around work that is not actually going ahead.

Think about what you want to improve: reliability, available space, straightforward controls or a concern with the existing arrangement. Avoid choosing equipment solely from an online headline price before the property has been assessed.

Show the existing arrangement safely

Have the current boiler’s model and any installation records ready. Tell the installer where the boiler, controls and any hot-water cylinder are located. Explain known access difficulties, especially equipment in a loft, restricted cupboards or work areas behind heavy furniture.

Do not remove covers, dismantle furniture or climb to inspect a flue for the survey. Ask in advance what ordinary access needs to be available and allow the installer to assess technical details appropriately.

Recent repairs or unresolved heating symptoms are relevant too. Replacing an appliance should not be assumed to resolve every issue elsewhere in the system. Describe those concerns so they can be considered when the scope is discussed.

Talk through the practical work

Ask about the proposed location, the work around existing pipework and controls, and any disruption to heating or hot water. The installer needs to establish what is suitable for the property and the chosen appliance. A preferred location may need further assessment before it can be included in a quotation.

Useful questions include whether removal of the old appliance, access work, electrical work, waste removal and making good are included or excluded. These are scope questions, not assumptions about what every installer supplies.

Understand what happens after the survey

  • Which appliance and control options are being proposed, and why?
  • What further information or checks are still needed?
  • What work is included, and what is outside the price?
  • What installation, handover and documentation arrangements are proposed?
  • How will changes to the agreed scope be recorded?

Ask for the proposal in a form you can review. Do not treat an informal discussion at the survey as the final quotation. Our guide to questions before accepting a boiler quote covers comparing the written details.
