How to check a gas engineer is registered

Find out how to check a gas engineer through the official register and why the qualifications for the work matter before an appointment.

At a glance

Before gas work begins, check the attending engineer's identity, current Gas Safe registration and qualifications for the specific work. A familiar company name, a logo on a vehicle or a recommendation does not replace checking the individual who will carry out the job.

The Health and Safety Executive advises householders to check the engineer’s ID card and the relevant work categories. This guide helps you prepare that conversation without relying on an invented registration number or a business-specific claim.

Use the official register

Go directly to the Gas Safe Register rather than an advert, a screenshot sent by a stranger or an unofficial directory. Use its current checking service and the details supplied by the business or engineer. If you cannot resolve the information online, use the contact options shown on the official website.

Keep the booking details together so you know which business you contacted and what work was discussed. If another person attends, repeat the identity check for that person. A check performed for a previous appointment does not establish the status of a different engineer.

Match the person and the work

Ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before work starts. Check that the photograph and identifying details relate to the person at your door and that the card is current. The qualifications listed on the reverse matter: gas work covers different appliances and activities, and registration alone should not be treated as permission for every possible task.

Describe what you have actually asked for, such as servicing a gas boiler or inspecting landlord gas appliances. If you are unsure whether the listed categories cover that task, ask the engineer to explain and verify the position through the official register. You do not need to interpret unfamiliar abbreviations under pressure.

Make the check part of a clear booking

When calling a business, ask who is expected to attend and how you can confirm their registration. Tell the team which appliance is involved, its make and model if known, and whether the property is rented. This also helps the business confirm that it can take on the job.

Useful questions include:

  • Who will carry out the gas work?
  • Which registration details should I use for the official check?
  • Does the attending engineer hold the relevant qualifications for this appliance and task?
  • What work and paperwork are included in the agreed visit?
  • What happens if the appointment or attending engineer changes?

These questions complement the normal discussion of access, availability and charges. Our guide to booking a visit in Leigh covers those practical arrangements.

If something does not match

Pause the planned work and contact the business through the number you independently used to make the booking. Do not rely solely on a new phone number handed to you at the door. If uncertainty remains about registration or competence, ask Gas Safe Register for guidance before allowing gas work to proceed.

This check is about the engineer and the proposed task. It does not replace a quotation, a service record or a landlord’s other responsibilities. If you need a landlord gas safety inspection, describe that separately from servicing or repairs.
