What is included in a gas boiler service?

Learn what to ask about a gas boiler service, what may be quoted separately and which information helps UKHS plan the visit.

At a glance

A gas boiler service follows the instructions for your appliance. Confirm the checks, paperwork, charge and any separately quoted work before booking.

A gas boiler service is a planned maintenance visit. Its scope should follow the instructions for your particular appliance, with the engineer explaining the findings and any further work. Before you book, ask what is covered, what paperwork you will receive and which costs would be separate.

For a homeowner in Leigh or a nearby town, that conversation is more useful than comparing two appointments by price alone. A clear description helps you understand what you are buying and gives the engineer the information needed to plan the visit.

Start with your boiler and its history

Have the make and model ready if you can find them in your household records or on an easily readable external label. The approximate age, last service date and any recent repairs are useful too. There is no need to remove a cover, reach into the boiler or climb to photograph a label.

Say whether the boiler currently works normally. If heating or hot water has become unreliable, a fault code appears, or something has changed, mention that when you call. A routine service and a fault investigation may need different arrangements. Our guide to choosing a service or repair appointment explains the distinction.

What checks might the service involve?

The precise work depends on the boiler. Manufacturer guidance describes checks of the appliance, its operation and relevant safety features, together with cleaning or maintenance where required. The engineer uses the applicable servicing instructions rather than a single checklist that fits every model. Vaillant’s servicing guidance, for example, points customers to the maintenance section of their appliance manual.

Ask the engineer to explain the scope in ordinary language. You do not need to supervise the technical procedure or attempt the checks yourself. Gas work must be carried out by a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineer; check the attending person’s identity and relevant work categories. The HSE’s gas safety guidance explains how to check registration and competence.

Agree what is included and what is separate

UKHS’s boiler servicing page sets out the process: confirm the appointment and scope, check the boiler in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, then explain the findings. Anything needing additional attention is discussed and quoted separately.

Before agreeing the appointment, ask these practical questions:

  • Does the quoted service cover this make and model?
  • What is the total charge, and are there any access or travel conditions?
  • How are replacement parts or a fault found during the visit handled?
  • Is any wider heating-system work included, or would that need a separate assessment?
  • What record will I receive, and how will outstanding recommendations be explained?

Do not assume that a service includes every repair, a system clean, or work on other gas appliances. If you need more than one task, describe each one so the scope can be agreed before the visit.

Leave with clear findings and useful records

Ask what was completed, whether anything remains unresolved and what the next step should be. Keep the service record alongside the appliance instructions and any relevant guarantee documents. Check your own manufacturer’s terms for servicing intervals and the evidence it requires; a generic article cannot confirm an individual guarantee.

A boiler service also should not be treated as interchangeable with a landlord gas safety check. The HSE explains that maintenance and the annual safety check have different purposes. Landlords who need both should ask for both explicitly and confirm the records required.
